Wednesday’s Card: Holiday Photo Card, Design #1

Holiday Photo Card

Holiday Photo Card

Hi All!

As you’ve heard me talk about before, I start planning my holiday cards WAY in advance. Usually by mid-August, I’m starting to think about it. And by September I’m working on a prototype.

Oh my, if you could have seen my prototype this year. It was the coolest card. A waterfall Christmas tree that flipped through four different photos when you pulled the trunk. The problem? First, it had hundreds of pieces. Okay, maybe not hundreds but it sure did feel like it. When I started creating the first for-real version, it was a ridiculous amount of work just to cut all the elements. The second problem… FOUR photos. I can’t even get one good photo I like! Sadly, I decided I just didn’t want to spend the time and effort on such a complicated card. My girls are still young, so I would rather spend that time with them. Maybe in a few years I’ll revisit that card.

As much as it hurt me (yes hurt me) to start over after so much thought and effort, I was glad I did. I ended up creating two new designs that were relatively simple and fun. Today I’m showing you the first one. I’ll be making 20 of these cards. I’ll show you the other one next week, which I will also make 20 of. I’m excited about having two separate designs – I think it will break up the monotony a bit.

I like the whimsical look of this card – it reminds me of Dr. Seuss and The Grinch Who Stole Christmas. The main stamp set I used was Ellen Hutson’s Christmas Scribbles. All the little stamps in this set are so adorable. I added some shimmer and glossy accents to them – here are a couple of close-ups:

  5. I love how you used washi tape on this card…great idea (less bulk than paper and less expensive than paper, too)!

    Thanks for sharing!

  6. G’day Darlene, goodness know how long I’ve been watching your lovely vid’s for but I must say I still enjoy them immensely…… wonderful christmas card – look forward to seeing your other design next week. x

  17. Simply Beautiful Darlene! I love CHRISTmas, and Home Made Cards to share the love of creating them for LOVED ONES! My your girls are all grown up! Smiles…thanks for your inspiration!

  18. I follow your blog regularly, but seldom leave a comment. I just had to tell you your girls are beautiful, and the card you designed does their photo justice. I just finished my 100th Christmas card, and I also use at least 2 designs that are simple to do in stacks. I usually start in August using one of the previous year’s design for the first half (for those who didn’t get it last year, of course) and then use a new design for the second half on my list. Then I sign them and address the envelopes on Black Friday, thereby avoiding the crowds at the mall. (I do my mall shopping on Cyber Monday.). Thanks for all your wonderful videos!

  19. Maria Rodriguez says:

I love this stamp set with the ornaments, they are so beautiful but, the best ornament is the one with your girls Darlene, how sweet and lovely and beautiful they are!!! WOW!! You are going to make 20 of this, looks simple but knowing how precise you are with your measurements and details, I think you need to start now, (or did you start already?)
Wonderful card, can’t wait till you show us the other design you are creating.
    Thank you for sharing:)

  20. I love that little touch of whimsey the doodle ornaments and hand drawing adds. You are so clever!
