Wednesday’s Card: Striped Background with Distress Paints

Distress Paints

Distress Paints

Hi All!

Today I’m using the new Hero Arts Stripes Pattern with some distress paints. As expected, they work beautifully with water. The butterflies are from the Stampin’ Up! Papillon Potpourri set, which has this matching punch as well as this matching punch. I broke out my paper distresser to fray the edges a little bit.

I’m almost done with my craft room move! I can’t wait to show it to you. In the process of going through everything, I decided it’s time to have another sale. My last sale was 18 months ago, so things have really piled up since then! I have mostly stamps, some dies, and some embossing folders. Mostly Stampin’ Up!, but some TSG and Stamps of Life. I will be posting the items on Thursday, January 16th, at 9:00am CT. My last sale was done over email – I didn’t expect the nightmare, as you can imagine, lol! This time I’m going to use a sign-up tool to allow people to claim items in real-time. Hopefully it will be easier. Anyway, just wanted to give you a heads up.

Enjoy the video and have a great weekend!

  1. Doris Cote says:

Other goodies they should bring back are the plastic holders/ containers for the wheels. They are so awkward to store. Any ideas?

    • Darlene DeVries says:

Sorry I can’t help you there either Doris! I have one wheel but I have never used it. Not sure why, but I never got into them.

  2. Darlene I have come back to look at this card three times since you posted it. It is so different and I love it. I’ll be honest–when you first showed us what background stamp you were going to use, I wasn’t sure if I liked it that much, As it turns out, I absolutely love the final product! Isn’t it funny how pictures aren’t everything πŸ™‚

Looking forward to your craft room photos. I have outgrown mine and need to organize and get a bigger desk, but I don’t know what kind yet. My current one is a small desk that was a hand me down.

  3. Mary Ann Huntington says:

What a WOW card. I love the distress ink technique.

  4. Hi Darlene, I’ve made some cards with your help again, here’s the link if you want to see them: I’ve sent people to your blog and your video tutorials. Thank you for all the inspiration!

  5. Robin in WA says:

    Beautiful card Darlene. Thanks!!!!

  6. Karen L K says:

That is a great looking card. Thanks for showing how to make it and how to clean that paint off.

  7. Doris Cote says:

Loved this one! Sent you a nice order and I had the butterfly stamps already! whoopee!
Does anyone sell stamp pads with no ink in them yet? Can you suggest to Stampin’ Up?
I have a lot of reinkers and could use them other ways , with a bit of inspiration- hint, but I’d also like to stamp with them. Dylusions has the huge one. Ranger has a warehouse sale by us once a year and they are loaded with reinkers and now I I’ll send you a bunch next year if you want. Surprising what labels they supply ink for.

    • Darlene DeVries says:

Thank you Doris. I remember SU used to sell the empty ink pads, but I just checked my catalog and didn’t see it. Now that I’ve been cardmaking several years, I’m starting to need reinkers! You never know what might come out on a Wednesday. πŸ™‚

  8. Maria A. Rodriguez says:

Hello Darlene: I love the background you made for this card, you always, always come up with the most fabulous ways to make backgrounds with just paint and stamps, really awesome. Your butterflies look so real, I love the way Vellum looks when heat embossed.
I can’t wait till you show us your new crafting room, I like to see the settings of craft rooms, how things are organized on other crafters places so I can take some tips to make my own craft room a better, more efficient place. I’m planning on doing some rearranging and definitely give it a nice paint job, I get a lot of sunlight so I want to take advantage of that.
Thank you for your videos, they are always awesome!!!!!

  9. The background looks really amazing and I love the color combo. Very beautiful card!

  10. Casey Thrush says:

It seemed like it to me but please take it as a compliment. Personally if anything looked thin on me I would be ecstatic! Wednesday do rock! I love seeing your creations. Can’t wait for next week!

    • Darlene DeVries says:

Of course I took it as a compliment Casey – who wouldn’t? πŸ™‚ I appreciate all your sweet comments.

  11. Darlene, this is such a creative card! I just love it! You have amazing photography skills, too πŸ™‚ Thanks for sharing with us!

  12. Mary, Wausau WI says:

Thanks for bringing some warmth to my sub-arctic central Wisconsin day! I can’t wait for the flowers to bloom and the butterflies to visit the gardens once again . . .

  13. Debbie Bonczek says:

Best part of Hump Day, as usual. Loving that background.

  14. Love the look of your distressed background Darlene. Will have to look into getting that HA stamp πŸ™‚ Great colors and I love the black accents. Loll xx

  15. Meli Isen says:

omg….i’m already thinking how I can post something since I will be at work lol….got to get me some of your crafty goodness!!!!! oh BTW I love the colors on the card!!! hehehehe ( I got all caught up in the sale!!!! πŸ™‚ )

  16. Terri (blindstamper) says:

  20. I sooo luv wed! I wait until there is no one to bother me! Just luv the card, now I know whay
to do with my daubers! Happy New Year Darlene!

  21. Sweet, sweet card, Darlene. I love your videos. Nice way to leave the holiday styles behind and look at new colors and designs. Thanks so much for sharing your love of stamping with us.

  22. ros mcpartlin says:

Hi, I love this card, it looks bigger than a regular 4.5 x 5.5 – is it? You always make simple cards looks so expensive and well made.
Thank you for taking the time to make you tubes, they do help us so much.

  23. Casey Thrush says:

Awesome! I like seeing new ideas!! Your hands are looking very thin today!

  24. How does the paint differ from the inks, is it just a thicker coverage? I’ve seen the paints when I shop at the craft stores but I thought it was the same thing, just a different way to apply the ink to the stamps.

    • Darlene DeVries says:

Hi Annie, the distress paints are just like regular paint – like you put on the walls of your house. It’s opaque and thick. It doesn’t absorb into the paper – it just lays on top.

  25. Jeanette Duke says:

I do love the look for a change, really pretty!

  26. This is really a gorgeous card…you done good girl.

  27. I just love the magical backgrounds you make with inks and paints. This is so wonderful. I have some ink daubers. Have I used them? Not much! πŸ˜‰
    Such a pretty card!
