My New Venture!

Hi All,

As the kids went back to school last week, I started wondering what I wanted to do over the next 9 months. I really like having goals and keeping busy. For the last two years, I have spent a lot of time volunteering at my children’s school. This year, I wanted to do something different.

I think many of you know that I am very health conscious. I always mention it when I am questioned about my interests outside of card-making. What you probably don’t know is that it’s more like an obsession than an interest for me! I’m very passionate about keeping my family healthy, but also about educating other people about food and health. When I see what some of my daughter’s friends bring to school for snack, it makes me really sad. I’ve been very frustrated with the lack of knowledge people have about healthy eating.

So, what to do? My husband says “write a book”. Well, with all the information I have gathered over the last few years, I could probably do that. But, that would take a very long time, and no one would benefit from the knowledge in the meantime. Plus, I wouldn’t feel right publishing a book without true nutritional credentials. Maybe that could be a long term goal of mine, but I wanted to do something a little faster and easier that could potentially touch a lot of people. So I guess you know where I’m going with this… yes, another blog.

I want to motivate people to get healthy. The purpose of the blog is to educate people on how to eat healthy and how to lose weight (do you know anyone who doesn’t want to lose weight?). I want to inspire people to stay strong and stay motivated. I’m providing personal accounts, inspirational photos, recipes, and tips on how to keep going. The basis of the blog is reducing the carbohydrates in your diet that come from refined and processed foods.

In addition to starting the blog, I have decided to become a certified Nutritional Consultant. I should finish my studies and exam by early 2013. It’s important to me that I dispense advice with credentials to back it up.

Just to be clear…I am not a health food junkie. I am not going vegan or promoting any extreme diets. I am not supporting any kind of diet supplement pills, cleanses, or liquid diets!! It’s about understanding what’s in your food and how your body uses it. Once you know, you can make the right choices for you.

Now, I am really putting myself out there with this blog. It’s kind of uncomfortable for me. I posted “my story”, which you can read if you are interested. I am hoping that people will stay interested and get on my bandwagon if they know me better.

I have been on a diet the last two months to get my weight back in line. I am not overweight today, but I struggle with sugary temptation BIG TIME. It’s difficult to stay healthy no matter what you look like.

I just started the blog this past week, so it’s not very fancy. If you have any suggestions on how to make it better, I would love to hear them. Right now, I am posting daily because I have a lot I want to share! I have nothing to gain from this blog other than knowing that I might be able to get some unhealthy people on track. I’m not selling anything, I’m not asking for anything. So, please, check it out and pass the link along to anyone you know who wants to be healthier.

As far as goes, nothing will change!! I still love card-making and will continue to post as much as I am posting today.

Okay, so here it is:

Thank you for listening and I’ll be back on Wednesday for a new card. 🙂

Good for you, Darlene. Whatever you do in this life, do it the best you can! That is one of my most favorite quotes. Abe Lincoln said Whatever you do, do it well (paraphrased). Don’t you love those? Well, maybe you will be the next healthy eating guru, hey, someone will be, why not you? Right? Loving your blog, and will go check out the other blog, but I have a bunch of videos to catch up on. I just recently discovered your blog, so, I have time to catch up on…LOL So far, love your style, and your videos, so, I am a fan. Chuckle. In a good way!!!

  2. Wonderful….and how great your are buying into a healthy lifestyle while you are still young! I am the same as you….I work hard to keep my weight in check….when I do pass on it won’t be because I am obese! 🙂 But I do have a serious sugar addiction that is always a struggle to deal with. I’ve been eating a healthy way for about 4 1/2 years now and it really has become a way of life for me. I weigh EVERY day and make adjustments…and try to make good choices. Sure I have the occasional bowl of ice cream or piece of cake but it’s all in moderation.
    good luck with your venture.
My daughter is a nutritionist and was doing a blog up until recently but stopped (she has two babies and just didn’t have the time for it) but she would take conventional recipes and alter them to make them more healthful. Like using avocado in place of butter in baking. Stuff like that….
anyway, off to check your new blog now!

  3. Thanks for your sweet reply, Darlene. I thought about what I had written later and I do want to clarify that along with eating smaller portions I will naturally be trying to eat healthier in many ways. I know I’ll be eating more fruits and veggies as well as just smaller portions of everything. I just won’t totally be depriving myself of favorite foods either. I enjoyed the story on your blog about going to the yogurt shop with your kids and just having a small serving. That makes so much more sense than depriving yourself totally. I’m a HUGE chocolate lover so there’s no way I’m not going to have some at least every now and then. I am actually using the Nutrisystem diet plan for a while at least, so for now everything will be pretty cut and dried. The real challenge will come when that ends and maintenance begins. I’m sure your blog will help with that. I didn’t have much time to look at your blog yesterday, but I will be back. It sounds like you have some really good information there that would be very helpful to most people.

  4. Darlene, You are Amazing. Good luck on your New Venture. I will be following your New Blog. (Who doesn’t need to loose weight???) I have tried them ALL. One year I lost 25 pounds at W.W. just as much as our Thanksgiving turkey weighed that year. It was the first year that I did not bake any pies. Well, now I am older and the pounds do not seem to be coming off as easily. You are a God Send… I have been miserable this summer with twenty unwanted pounds. I will be definitely be watching your blog…… Thanks so much Darlene for the dedication in ALL YOU DO.

  5. Good Luck Darlene ! It’s a great idea and Wow… it’s going to be a big job for you to work on that. Bonne Chance !
Don’t know if I will be able to follow your diet rules (saw already stuff that I can’t live without !) and I do need to go on diet …
Also, I hope no body will pick your ideas to write a book too ! I ‘ll be following your blog. Not sure I will understand all but will try to adapt to french food.
I also have a problem with fruit and vegetables… these are very expensive and not always affordable. It’s awful but spaghetti diners are due to budget ! Isn’t it terrible to have to eat based on your budget ? It’s an issue for me, but can’t change the situation !
Good luck again and lots of Hugs from France !

  6. Hello Darlene: This is indeed a great venture. Sometimes our busy lives are a good excuse to abandon working out and eating right. My grandkids are back in school so now, it’s easier for me to get back out there and swim, bike and run. My biggest problem is my darn sweet tooth, LOVE ice cream and, to be perfectly honest, “light” or ”fat free” ice cream doesn’t do a thing for me so, I buy the real thing but eat half the suggested portion and that is good enough for me, since it’s the taste and the texture that I crave. I’ll be 61 on Friday so I hope my daughters and grandchildren don’t bring a Baskin Robins ice cream cake for me because I will eat it, ALL OF IT and that ain’t going to be good, LOL!!
Anyway, thank you for this new venture that will help a lot of us keep track of what we eat and thank you also for keep making your fabulous cards, that kind of goodies are to darn good to give up.

  7. Congrats on your new venture. I am sure you will be successful with that as well. You have so much energy and talent.. It is great.

  8. Good Luck with your new venture Darlene. I know with your dedication, and commitment you will be very successful and an inspiration. I love your card blog and look forward to your posts each week and now I will be a follower on your new blog.

  9. Wow, that’s great, Darlene!!! 😀 I am a Seventh-day Adventist and we have a wonderful health message that also educates A TON on every aspect of health (nutrition, exercise, etc.) in case you were interested in acquiring even more information on healthy choices (: Congrats on your new venture and may GOD bless you mightily for your desire to share valuable/positive information with others!

  10. Good luck Darlene. I’ll definitely be reading your new blog. So glad you’re not giving the cards a miss as I’ve just sent your details to a few friends who have just started card making and I thought your blog would be one of the best for them to follow.
    Again, good luck!!

Your new blog is great – I hardly ever have a McDonald’s hamburger but won’t ever look at them the same way!!! Of course, if I weighed 118, I wouldn’t even be looking at this either! All the best to you and I will continue to read and get your very good info and advice!

  12. Congratulations on your new venture. I can’t wait to follow your journey. 🙂

  13. Darlene, this is amazing news! I will be checking out your blog everyday! I too like to eat healthy and like many others struggle with it. I think it is a really great idea that you are starting this blog!

  14. Congrats and good luck with your new blog Darlene! I don’t know if I’m gonna check it out, just beacause of the language, I prefer Dutch. I’m so happy to hear that you will keep making cards and videos! Thanks!

  15. Well you are just fabulous! I’v just started working out w/ my DH and we’re in the boat of, oh-my-gosh-how-did-it-get-this-bad-what-were-we-thinking! With that, we’re so over fad diets and really just want to change our, here it comes, lifestyle 😉 So, we’ve been working out for 1 month, even got a personal trainer for a quick how-to. Count me in on your new blog. I’m heading there now!

  16. Thank you, Darlene! I really needed what I am reading on your healthy blog!

  17. Thanks for sharing what your goal for the future, I admire your decision to do something worth and helpful to not only yourself but your loving care for the other people around you. If everyone does a little difference, the world will be a better to live. Thanks for the big heart, I am totally a fan for you. Dig deep, surf far and fly high. The sky is your limit. So bring the heaven to the earth.

  18. Good luck with your new blog. I should probably be a subscriber to it. I am actually starting a diet today! LOL!! Until just the past couple of years, I had been one of those people who could eat as much as I wanted and anything I wanted and I never had a weight problem. Sadly, that has changed… so unfortunately it is time to change my eating habits. I really think my major problem is lack of activity since I had to stop working due to a disability. But, for now, I’m going the “smaller portions” route. I just can’t see giving up any one type of food. Every time you turn around there’s a new study disputing a previous study about what is healthy and what is not healthy. So, my conclusion is that there really isn’t a lot out there that is unhealthy in moderation. I’ve never liked to exercise at all and never needed to for weight control, but now I hope to find some way to get more “movement” into my life. That will be much more difficult for me than eating smaller portions.

Colorado, I know exactly what you mean – it’s hard to know what to think when everyone is telling you something new each day… eggs are good, eggs are bad, no, eggs are good, ugh!! Regarding your exercise, even just a little walking would be great, if that’s something doable for you. Thanks for sharing and I hope to see you visiting on my new blog!
