Wednesday’s Card: Gratitude Flower

Blue Flower

Hi All!

First, I want to let you know that I officially turned off my previous subscription program (because of this problem), so if you did not receive an email for this post, you’ll need to re-subscribe in the right margin.

This week I decided to use the marker/watercolor paper technique I used awhile back in THIS CARD. It’s a way to use Stampin’ Up! markers like Copic markers. The only thing is that you must use watercolor paper. I’m only familiar with the Stampin’ Up! watercolor paper – I don’t know if you’ll get the exact same results from other brands. But try it and let me know!

All you need is ONE Stampin’ Up! marker and a blender pen. So easy! There are so many great things about this technique (i.e. using Stampin’ Up!’s coordinating colors, minimal supplies, less expensive than Copics, etc), but what I really love is how vibrant the color appears.

In January, Stampin’ Up! came out with these Edgelit Dies. I used one of them to create this card shape. It was seriously very easy to do! The pack comes with 2 different dies.

I think this video came out okay, but HOLY COW. Why can’t we just buy a new piece of electronics and have it work right out of the box?? No. There are only 1 million permutations of video quality/picture size/frame rate/recording mode/blah blah blah. All the moons have to align before it works. Amazingly enough, I managed to pull this video out! I’m sure it will get easier – it’s just a little bit of a learning curve.

If you haven’t taken advantage of Stampin’ Up! Sale-a-Bration event, you still have 2 more weeks. You get a free product for every $50 you spend. Also don’t forget that I donate my 20% commission to Foster Kids Charity. You can tell your spouse that it’s for the foster kids. :)

Oh, one more thing! I am the guest designer on Lily Pad cards next Wednesday! That means I will have 3 cards on their site! I am also planning a video on how I made one of the cards, so I will post that one to the blog. Can’t wait!!

Enjoy and have a great week!

Darlene this is an awesome card. Your coloring technique is great. I have a question though. I don’t have the stampin up markers so can you use the ink pads with a blender pen? Are the markers worth the investment even if you have a full set(almost) of copice markers?

  2. What a beautiful card, love the way you made the shape. Your coloring technique is perfect, even love the stem.

  6. Hi – I love this card and the nifty way to use the die and so helpful with the coloring. I just can’t bring myself to spend the $ on the copics – but maybe a one of the pens to shade. Thank you so much for the lovely ideas. You must dream in color!

  7. I could watch you colour in all day long Darlene! Very therapeutic. Lovely card with a lovely technique.

I loved your tutorial on the SU markers and coloring the flower. I wonder if you could tell me what kind of camera set up you have. I’d like to do tutorials on my blog and I don’t know where to begin. Your video and audio are both wonderful.

Mary – I just added a FAQ‘s to address this.

Lillian, it will be much harder to get the same effect with ink pads and a blender pen – you just won’t get the color saturation you need. As far as whether they are worth the investment if you have all the Copics, it’s hard to say! I use them for different purposes, so to me, they are different products. But, you really don’t have to make a heavy investment in the markers. You can always buy a few and see if you like them. Good luck!

  11. Hi,

I loved your card and your blog. Congratulations!!!

I don’t understand the Copic Sketch Markers colors that you used. You can send me?

    Thanks.

Sueli – I just used C1 (gray) and 0 (colorless) to create the shadow behind the flower. The rest of the colors are just water-based Stampin’ Up! markers.

Darlene, this was the most useful blending tutorial I have found. Thank you for sharing.
I do not have copic markers, but I will be getting the two you used for shadowing. This will take my card making up a notch. Look forward to more tutorials in the future.
